FAQ - CIVIL CASES

What kind of civil cases do you handle? There are many kinds of civil claims that can be made in Maryland and Federal courts. We concentrate our practice in Frederick and Washington Counties, and we limit the types of claims we handle to the general areas that are spelled out below.

Personal injury: if you are injured through the negligence of another person, you may have the right to recover damages from the at-fault party. Damages can include past and future medical expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship, among other types. Automobile accidents are the most common type of personal injury case, which almost always involves dealing with insurance companies and their lawyers. Schaffer & Black, PC routinely handles these types of cases and may be able to assist you in recovering from your loss. For more information on these cases, click here.

Family law: Divorces and child custody matters are very commonly litigated in Frederick and Washington County courts. Each of those courts, like many others, have Masters appointed by the Circuit Court judges who handle many of the issues relating to family cases. Because the lawyers at Schaffer & Black, PC have appeared many times before these Masters, we are familiar with how to resolve your case in these special proceedings.

Estate matters: Wills and litigation pertaining to estates are commonly handled before the Orphan’s Court, a special court that deals only with these types of issues. Whether you simply want a will drafted to protect your family after your death, or whether you are in the middle of a contested battle over another person’s estate, Schaffer & Black, PC can assist you and advise you how to handle this legal matter.

Real Estate: Anyone who has ever questioned whether their neighbor’s fence is on the wrong side of the property line may have a real property case. Disputes over who owns what portion of land or a home can involve judgments that run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars and can have permanent consequences to property ownership, so they should not be taken lightly. We have experience with these types of issues and can guide you through the Courts.

Other civil matters: Schaffer & Black, PC have represented individuals and businesses in many other kinds of civil disputes such as breach of contract, peace orders or domestic violence protection orders, landlord-tenant, and other matters.
